Union Pacific Series 4000 (colloquial name: Big Boy) is a series of steam locomotives (steam locomotives) that were produced in 1941 and 1944 by ALCO (American Locomotive Company) in the number of 25 pieces. The length of a single locomotive (without tender) is 26.16 meters, and the service weight - 548.3 tons. The Whyte notation locomotive had an extremely rare 4-8-8-4 layout.
The Union Pacific Series 4000 steam locomotives were manufactured for the Union Pacific Railroad and are unique in several respects. First of all, they are quite widely recognized as one of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives in the 20th century. Some sources give them priority in these fields. They were also the only ones to have a layout in Whyte's 4-8-8-4 notation, which was dictated by the size of the locomotives, as well as their use for transporting loads at high speeds of 130 km / h. The locomotives were characterized by a considerable safety margin and relatively easy operation, and were successfully used by the operator during the Second World War. In 1959, a steam locomotive of this type made its last journey. At present, eight out of 25 produced Big Boy steam locomotives are used as museum objects.
