The Allison T56 is an American turboprop engine from the Cold War and modern times. Its first successful start-up took place in the early 1950s. The main manufacturer of these engines was the Allison Engine Company (now owned by Rolls-Royce Corporation) and total production exceeded 18,000 units. In the Series IV version of the T56, this engine is 3.71 meters long with a diameter of 0.69 meters. The "dry" weight of this type of engine does not exceed 880 kilograms. The engine in this version is able to generate a maximum power of 4,350 hp, but limited to 4,100 hp. The presented engine was developed on the basis of the Allison T38 unit, which was tested in the 1940s. From the very beginning, it was also assumed that the new power unit would serve as an engine for Lockheed C-130 Hercules transport aircraft. It is also worth remembering that initially the Allison T56 engine caused many problems related mainly to its high failure rate and low overall life. However, these problems were quickly resolved, and the subsequent production versions turned out to be highly reliable and fully meeting the requirements. It is worth noting that from the moment of entering production (1954) to the present day, the planes powered by this power unit have flown over 200 million hours! It should also be added that various versions of this engine were used on such aircraft as: Grumman C-2 Greyhound, Lockheed C-130 Hercules, Northrop Grumman E-2 Hawkeye or Lockheed P-3 Orion.
