The OTO Melara L / 44 120mm is an Italian 120mm smoothbore tank gun from modern times. In essence, it is a slightly modernized, licensed version of the German Rheinmetall Rh-120 cannon. Currently, it is the main armament of the Ariete C1 tank. The OTO Melara L / 44 cannon has a barrel length of 44 calibers, i.e. 528 centimeters. It was made of specially hardened steel, thanks to which it is characterized by a long service life, as well as does not undergo micro-deformations under the influence of intense fire. It also has a heat shield and an ejector responsible for the removal of gunpowder gases. The gun, thanks to the use of a good vertical and horizontal stabilization system, is characterized by high accuracy both when shooting while driving and when parked. The fire unit for the OTO Melara L / 44 gun in the Ariete C1 is 42 shells. It is worth adding that the gun can fire most of the 120 mm NATO rounds, but most of all it uses HEAT and APFSDS-T missiles.
