The most modern seaplane of Dutch construction built before the war was the twin-engine Fokker T.VIII-W, designed in 1937 according to the requirements of MLD (Dutch Navy Aviation) for a torpedo-reconnaissance aircraft. The Fokker T.VIII-W was one of the few planes that fought on both sides of the front during the war. The prototype of the aircraft first flew in 1938. Initially, 5 and then a further 14 aircraft in the T.VIII W / G variant were ordered. The planes entered service in 1939. One of them was attacked on September 13, 1939 (the Netherlands was not at war with Germany at the time) by the German Do-18 crew. At the time of the German attack, the Dutch aviation had 11 T.VIII-W / G aircraft, which were initially used for patrol flights, but as the situation worsened, they were evacuated to France and then to Great Britain. There, from 8 T.VIII-W planes, the Dutch Coastal Defense Squadron No. 320 was created. At the same time, in the occupied Netherlands, the Germans continued the production of 8 T.VIII-W / G and 12 T.VIII-W / M aircraft, with the rear part of the semi-shell structure of duralumin. These planes were used by the Luftwaffe over the waters of the North and Mediterranean seas for reconnaissance, combat against naval targets and rescue. It is little known that the Fokker T.VIII-W had one more variety, marked with the letter C, apparently the same as the float variety; in fact, it differed significantly in dimensions and engine power (2x Bristol Mercury XI, 665 kW each). It was an export variant, intended primarily for Finland, which ordered a larger plane. Five enlarged planes, including four T.VIII-W / C and one T.VIII-L (land version with wheels), were taken over by the Luftwaffe. Technical data: Maximum speed: 285 km / h, maximum ceiling 6800 m, maximum range: 2750 km, armament: fixed - 2 FN Browning 7.9 mm machine guns, suspended - up to 600 kg of bombs or torpedoes.
