Evzones (English Evzones, Greek Evzonoi) is a Greek light infantry formation, which dates back to the 1830s. It was formed shortly after the Greek War of Independence (1821-1829) by King Otto I of the Wittelsbach family. Units of this type took part in both the Balkan wars (1912-1913 and 1913) and in the course of World War I (1914-1918). At that time, they were treated as an elite formation in the Greek armed forces, and their training placed particular emphasis on fighting in mountainous terrain and acting as the front guard of their own troops. Evzones were also very successfully used during the Italian-Greek war (1940-1941), when they fought with Italian troops in northwestern Greece and Albania. Often in the course of this conflict, Ezon units showed high combat value and their own initiative on the battlefield. It is worth adding that the heroic attitude of one of the Evzons went down in Greek history - Konstantinos Koukidis - who was forced in April 1941 by the German occupation forces to remove the Greek flag from the mast on the Acropolis of Athens. The young soldier, however, did not hand it over to the Germans, but tied it around himself and jumped from the Acropolis to certain death. At present, the Evzones play the role of primarily a representative military formation.
