The Type 42 or Sheffield-class is a type of British missile destroyer that entered service from 1975. In the case of the Batch 3 subtype, they were 141 m long, 14.9 m wide with a draft of 5.8 m. The displacement of the ships was up to 5,300 tons, and the maximum speed - up to 30 knots. The Type 42 Batch 3 destroyers were armed with: a single 114mm gun, two Sea Dart launchers, and two 30mm Oerlikon CIWS sets. The units could carry out air operations using a single Westland Lynx helicopter.

Type 42 Missile Destroyers (Sheffield-class) They were designed in the late 1960s to provide anti-aircraft cover for the larger Royal Navy ship complexes over medium and long distances. They were also designed to complement the much larger Type 82 destroyers (the so-called Bristol type), which, however, did not enter service with the exception of one coil (HMS Bristol). Undoubtedly, the Sheffield-class destroyers in the late 1970s and early 1980s had good electronic equipment and good sea prowess, but they were far from underarmed and had no direct defense armament, which turned out to be a fatal mistake. This was especially true of the Batch 1 and partially Batch 2 sub-types, and the Royal Navy was painfully convinced of this during the Falklands War in 1982, losing two ships of this type (HMS Sheffield and HMS Coventry). The painful lesson learned from this conflict led to the modernization (subtype Batch 3) and the introduction of CIWS kits, the addition of light armor and a significant extension of units. The entire Sheffield class consisted of 16 ships, and in the Royal Navy, such units were withdrawn from the line by 2013.
