HMCS Snowberry (K166) was a British, and later Canadian, WWII corvette. The keel for this unit was laid in February 1940, the launch took place in August of the same year, and entry into service took place in November 1940. The total length of the ship was 62.5 meters and a width of 10 meters. Full displacement reached approx. 950-1000 tons, and maximum speed - approx. 16 knots. The ship's armament included: a single 102 mm cannon, four 12.7 and 7.7 mm machine guns, a drop-off site and two depth charge launchers.
HMCS Snowberry (K166) was one of the Flower class gunboats. The ships of this type were designed as units intended primarily for the protection of Allied Atlantic convoys, and their main task was ZOP (anti-submarine combat) activities. Their design was simplified as much as possible, as it was supposed to be suitable for mass production of units even in small shipyards, without adequate experience. Units of this type had an archaic, for the years of World War II, but simple to build, a power plant based on a reciprocating steam engine, and not - which was rather standard then - a steam turbine. During the war, units of this type were modernized - mainly by adding new hydroacoustic devices. One of the units of this class was the HMCS Snowberry (K166), which was built at the George T. Davie and Sons Limited shipyard in Luzon, Canada, on a British order, and was finally equipped at the shipyard in Greenock, Great Britain. The unit was handed over to the Canadian Navy shortly after entering service in the Royal Navy. Until the beginning of 1942, she escorted convoys between Newfoundland and Iceland. At the turn of 1941/1942 HMCS Snowberry underwent a short renovation, but later returned to service. She participated in the cover of the Atlantic convoys until 1944. The ship luckily survived the end of the war, and in 1945 she returned to the Royal Navy. A year later (1946), HMCS Snowberry was reclassified as a target ship to be sold for scrap in August 1947.
