The I-176 (originally ordered as I-76) was a Japanese submarine that was laid down in 1940, launched in June 1941, and commissioned in the Imperial Japanese Navy in August 1942. The length of the ship at the time of launching was 105.5 m, width 8.3 m, and the underwater displacement - 2,600 tons. The maximum surface speed of the I-76 was 23.1 knots on the surface. The main armament was six 533mm torpedo launchers, and the secondary armament was a single 120mm gun and two 25mm Type 96 AA guns.

The I-176 was a submarine of the Kaidai class (subtype: KD7), which in turn was based on the experiences and solutions of the KD6A and KD6B subtypes of the same class. The KD7B subtype was very similar to its predecessors, but it had changed secondary armament, a slightly different arrangement of the space inside the ship, and was also characterized by higher autonomy, i.e. it could stay on patrol longer. The I-176 began its combat route in World War II very successfully - with serious damage to the American cruiser USS Chester in October 1942. Shortly thereafter, the I-176 began to act as a transport submarine supplying Japanese troops fighting in the Gudalcanal. In March 1943, the ship was nearly sunk in an attack by B-25 bombers, but fortunately survived the attack and, after repairs, returned to service in the summer of the same year. In November 1943, the ship was quite successful in sinking the American submarine USS Corvina. Interestingly, it was the only submarine lost by the US Navy during the Pacific War and sunk by another submarine. I-176 was sunk in May 1944 as a result of a depth charge attack by several American destroyers in the Buka Island area.
