The Mk.48 (or: Mark 48) Machine Gun is a modern Belgian-American light machine gun of 7.62 mm caliber. The first rifles of this type entered service in 2003 and are still in service. The weight of the empty rifle is about 8.2 kilograms, and its length is almost 100 centimeters. The rate of fire of the Mk.48 is 710-760 rounds per minute. The effective range of the shot is about 800 meters, with a maximum range of 3600 meters. The Mk.48 rifle was developed by the FN Herstal company and is manufactured in the United States (in South Carolina) for the needs of the American armed forces, including special forces. The Mark 48 is to complement the M60 rifles, and in special units to replace this type of weapon altogether. The new rifle is lighter and smaller than the M60, and has a higher rate of fire and a similar effective and maximum range. To date, two types of this rifle have been created: Mk.48 Mod 0 and Mk.48 Mod 1, which differ from each other, among other things, in weight and barrel length.
