The Junkers Jumo 004 was a German WWII aircraft engine manufactured by Junkers Flugzeug- und Motorwerke AG. It was first launched in 1940, and the first flight tests took place in 1942. The engine - in the Jumo 004B version - had a weight of 719 kilograms and a length of 386 centimeters. It was the first mass-produced turbojet engine in the history of aviation.

Work on the future Jumo 004 engine started already in 1939, and the first attempts of this highly innovative drive unit for those times took place in 1940. The work on the Jumo 004 engine was led by dr. Anselm Franz, encountering more and more problems and technological difficulties, especially related to the combustion chamber of the engine and compressor blades. However, even at the time of entering serial production, the engine had a short service life. In the case of the Jumo 004A version, the engine could work fully efficiently for about 100 hours, and in the 004 B version, this value dropped to about 75 hours, due to the use of a smaller amount of valuable strategic raw materials, such as aluminum. In the course of production, several development versions were created that differed in thrust and weight, for example the 004 B model had a thrust of 8.2-8.8 kN, the Jumo 004C already 9.81 kN, and the Jumo 004 E version - already 11.77 kN. The Junkers Jumo 004 engine - in various versions - was used as a power unit for such German aircraft as: Arado Ar-234 B or Messerschmitt Me 262.
