2A46 is a 125 mm tank gun from the Cold War period and modern times of Soviet and Russian production. The first prototypes of the gun were created in the 1960s, and the gun entered service with the Soviet Army around 1970. The total weight of the gun in the basic version (designation: 2A46) is 2675 kg, and in the modernized version (designation: 2A46M) - "only" 2400 kg. The barrel length of the gun in the basic version is 6.35 meters, and in the 2A46M version - 6.381 meters. The gun was originally developed as the main armament of the Soviet Army's new Main Battle Tank (MBT), the T-64, and when it entered service it was probably one of the best weapons in its class in the world. Compared to other tank guns of that time, it was characterized by a high rate of fire, considerable effective range and very good ballistic properties. Thanks to subsequent modernizations (e.g. 2A46M, 2A46M-1 or 2A46M-5) still retains decent or good combat capabilities. It is worth noting that the cannon can fire various types of ammunition - including, of course, APDS (anti-tank armor-piercing shell with a throwing sabot), HEAT (armor-piercing HEAT shell) or APFSDS (armor-piercing armor-piercing armor-piercing shell with a throwing sabot). It is worth adding that the cannon can also fire special anti-tank guided missiles. Currently, various versions of the 2A46 cannon are the basic armament of such vehicles as: the Croatian M-84D, the Polish PT-91 Twardy, the Ukrainian T-84 or various variants of the Russian T-72, T-80 or T-90.
