AFV Club 35S82 NM-116 Royal Norwegian Army

The NM-116 is a Norwegian light tank from the Cold War period. The length of the wagon - without a barrel - was 5.03 meters and a width of 2.82 meters. The drive was provided by a single engine diesel 6V53T with 260 HP . The armament consisted of a 90mm D-925 cannon and one 12.7mm machine gun. After the end of World War II, the Norwegian armed forces acquired approximately 120 American M24 Chaffee tanks. However, already in the 1960s it became clear that these vehicles would not be able to engage in equal combat with Soviet vehicles such as the T-54, T-55 or especially the T-62. On the other hand, the Norwegian army was aware that the purchase of completely new tanks would be beyond its financial capacity. With both of these issues in mind, it was decided to significantly modernize some of the M24's owned, which in fact led to the creation of a completely new car - the NM-116. The reconstruction included the replacement of the drive unit, which now had the form of the so-called "Power pack", with an engine similar to that used in the M113 transporters. In addition, the main armament has been changed from a 75mm cannon to a 90mm cannon. A completely new fire control system using a laser rangefinder was installed. The first cars modernized in this way were created in the early 1970s, and they were withdrawn from service only in 1993!
