Neuschwanstein is a German castle built in the second half of the 19th century, located in southern Bavaria in the municipality of Schwangau. The initiator of the construction of the castle was the King of Bavaria, Ludwik II of the Wittelsbach family, also known as the Mad or the Fairy-tale King. The construction of the castle began in 1869, and the present name of the building was given in 1886. The original plans for the building were developed by Christian Jank, and its assumptions were creatively developed by Eduard Riedel and Georg von Dollmann. The building was erected in the spirit of historicism and was modeled on European medieval knights' castles, using many architectural solutions typical of the Gothic style. It was a castle only in name, because it served as a magnificent residence and royal palace. At present, Neuschwanstein Castle is considered to be one of the greatest tourist attractions in Germany, and it is visited by about 1.3 million tourists every year!
