The PZL M-4 Tarpan was a Polish prototype training and sports plane with a metal structure, in the low wing structure with retractable landing gear, from the post-war period. The drive was provided by a single engine WN-6B2 with power up to 185 HP. The plane was first flown in 1961, but it did not enter mass production. The machine did not have a permanent on-board armament. The PZL M-4 Tarpan was commissioned by the Polish Aero Club at the WSK-Mielec plant as a successor to the PZL M-2, which was not put into production. Initially, it was planned to create two versions of the aircraft: one for aerobatics (PZL M-4A) and the classic, two-seat training and training version (PZL M-4). Finally, the aerobatic version was withdrawn, and the PZL M-4 version was adapted to training in navigation flights (M-4P). Despite the fact that the new plane was generally a rather successful design, it did not enter mass production. The reasons for this fact are most often indicated: a certain operational problem with the engine, a relatively high unit price or the loss of interest of the Polish Aero Club in a new design after receiving TS-8 aircraft from the military.
