It is assumed that the first jet engine in history was constructed before the outbreak of World War I by Henri Coand in 1910, which was used on the Coanda-1910 plane. There are doubts, however, whether this machine ever took to the air, and no doubt the engine used on it was only a distant ancestor of later jet engines. Work on this type of engine was continued after 1918, and in 1930 the British Frank Whitle patented a modern jet engine. However, a few days before the outbreak of World War II, the first ever plane powered by such an engine - the German Heinkel He-178 - flew into the air. The end of World War II saw the introduction of jet machines to the line on an increasing scale - primarily the German Me-262 or the British Gloster Meteor. After 1945, it became obvious that a jet engine would dominate military aviation. Currently, there are several types of jet engines: rocket engine, jet engine, turbojet engine and turbofan engine. It is worth adding that a jet engine is essentially an internal combustion engine in which thermal energy is converted into kinetic energy of gases leaving the engine nozzle. These gases - as they exit the nozzle at great speed - create the thrust.
