The VPK-7829 Bumerang was developed to replace the BTR-80 and BTR-90 family vehicles in the Russian armed forces. Advanced work on the prototype took place around 2010, and in 2013 the first prototypes were delivered for testing in the army of the Russian Federation. Most likely, deliveries of the first serial copies of this car began in 2015 - this year, the public presentation of the Bumerang car at the Victory Day parade also took place. Serial production targets are likely to exceed 2,000 vehicles. The K-16 version is also the base for the production of the K-17 (infantry fighting vehicle) variant with reinforced armament, consisting of a 30mm 2A42 cannon, a Kornet anti-tank guided missile launcher and a 7.62mm machine gun.
