Kasumi (Japanese: Flower Fog) was a Japanese destroyer, the keel of which was laid in 1936, launched in November 1937, and commissioned in the Imperial Japanese Navy in June 1938. The length of the ship at the time of launching was 118 m, width 10.3 m, and full displacement - 2,600 tons. Destroyer Minegumo's top speed was up to 35 knots. The main armament at the time of the launch was 6 127 mm guns in three twin turrets, and the secondary armament was 2 25 mm cannons, depth charge launchers and eight 610 mm torpedo tubes.
Kasumi was the eighth Asashio-class destroyer. Destroyers of this type were a development of the not very successful Shiratsuyu type. Compared to its predecessors, the main artillery was significantly strengthened, new anti-aircraft armament was added and four-tube torpedo tubes were used. The main disadvantage of the Asashio type was the low maneuverability, but until the outbreak of the war in the Pacific, this error was corrected by using a new type of rudder and redesigning the stern of the ships. Destroyer Kasumi started the war in the Pacific by indirectly participating in the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. In January and February 1942, it was already covering aircraft carriers attacking, among others: Rabaul and Port Darwin. In April of the same year, he took part in the famous rally of the Japanese fleet to the Indian Ocean, and in June he fought near Midway, where he was not damaged. Shortly thereafter, it was badly damaged and sent back for repairs to Japan, which lasted until the summer of 1943. At the turn of 1943-1944, one of the main artillery towers was removed from Kasumi in order to strengthen the anti-aircraft armament. Thus armed, he fought in the Gulf of Leyte (October 1944), which he was the only destroyer of the Asashio type to survive. Kasumi was sunk on April 7, 1945 during Operation Ten-Go.
