Artillery tower no. 31 st. Benedict, or in fact an artillery fort, which was part of the fortress in Krakow, was erected in the years 1853-1856. The Austrian authorities, mindful of the experiences of the Krakow Uprising (1846), as well as the later events of the Spring of Nations (1848-1849), already in 1850 decided to build a fortress in Krakow. The first period of work aimed at creating the entire fortification complex lasted in the years 1850-1878, and the first buildings erected from scratch were four forts - 12, 17, 2 and 33, the so-called Krakus. The latter received two artillery towers (forts) in his field: no. 32 and no. 31. The artillery tower no. 31 was designed by the Krakow architect Feliks Ksiêgarski and erected on the Lasota hill, on the border of Krzemionki. The tower was rebuilt many times (e.g. in the years 1893-1905), and during World War II it served as a prison for French prisoners of war. At present, due to its good condition, it is one of the unique buildings of this type in Poland and Europe.
