Cannon 5 cm KwK 39 L / 60 is a German 50mm tank gun from the Second World War. The gun was developed on the basis of anti-tank guns. PaK 38 of the same caliber, but with a longer barrel. The new gun was to increase the anti-tank fire capabilities of Pz.Kpfw tanks. III, but against the T-34/76 or KW-1 vehicles it turned out to be not very useful. However, it was used as the main armament of the Pz.Kpfw tanks. III Ausf. J, L and M, as well as the armored car Sd.Kfz. 234/2. Several types of ammunition were used in this gun. The first was the Panzergranate (PzGr.) 39 which was an APCBC (Armor Piercing, Capped, with Ballistic Cap - High Explosive) missile, i.e. it was an anti-tank core missile with a ballistic cap. Its initial speed was only 835 m / s. Such a missile could penetrate an armor plate with a slope of 30 degrees, 59 mm thick over a distance of 500 meters, 48 mm thick at a distance of 1000 meters and 37 mm at a distance of 1500 meters. The PzGr missile was also used. 40, i.e. an APCR (Armor Piercing, Composite Rigid) missile with an initial velocity of up to 1180 m / s. In this case, the projectile could cross an armor plate inclined at an angle of 30 degrees, 72 mm thick from 500 meters and 38 mm from 1000 meters. Sprenggranate 38 (Sprgr. 38) shells were also used in the KwK 39 gun.
