The E-166 (or: Ye-166) is the designation for an experimental Soviet Cold War fighter. The prototype flight took place in 1961. The machine never entered mass production. The propulsion was provided by the Tumański R-15-300 turbojet engine with a thrust of 66.7 kN, and with the afterburner - 99.6 kN. The length of the machine was 19.7 meters with a wingspan of 8.8 meters. The top speed was up to Mach 2.85. It was assumed that the plane would be armed with two 23mm cannons and two air-to-air missiles. In essence, the E-166 is another designation for the E-152-1 aircraft used for commercial purposes Federation aeronautique internationale (in short: FAI) during the so-called record flights from 1961-1962, during which world records for airspeed were set. The E-152-1 aircraft was developed by the Mikoyan and Guriewicz plants for the needs of the Soviet military aviation. The aim was to create a heavy interceptor with the highest possible maximum speed and climb. Despite the fact that several versions of the aircraft were created, it did not enter mass production, and the entire program was canceled in 1962.
